Choose an available 12-minute audition time below. Once a time is reserved, it will no longer be available to other singers. Walk-ins are also welcome as time permits.
Section 2. Audition Details and Expectations
Vocal Affinity welcomes singers from all walks of life and a wide range of musical backgrounds. A music degree is not required, and we value the different experiences and skill sets our singers bring to the ensemble. At the same time, Vocal Affinity is an artistically ambitious ensemble, and all members are expected to maintain a strong level of musical competence, preparation, and excellence. We strive to create a space where singers can contribute, grow, and thrive through a shared commitment to high-level music-making.

What to Expect
Auditions are approximately 12 minutes and may include:
- A brief excerpt of a solo piece of your choice, sung a cappella. Choose something that allows you to share your artistry, musical vision, and interpretation with us.
- Vocalizes to explore range, tone, flexibility, and vocal responsiveness
- Musicianship exercises, which may include intervals, scales, tonal memory, and related aural skills
- Sight-reading
- A brief conversation about your musical background and interest in Vocal Affinity
There will also be an opportunity to ask questions about the ensemble and upcoming season.
How to Prepare
Please come prepared with your chosen solo excerpt and spend some time refreshing your foundational musicianship skills, particularly sight-reading, intervals, scales, intonation, and pitch recognition.
Every singer brings different strengths and experiences into the room. The audition is not simply an opportunity for us to assess your voice and musicianship—it is also a chance for us to hear who you are as an artist and begin getting to know what you may bring to the ensemble.
Section 3. Rehearsal and Membership
Vocal Affinity typically rehearses Monday evenings from 7:00–9:00 PM in North Hollywood. Rehearsals include both full-ensemble work and sectionals, giving us time to develop the music together while allowing individual sections to strengthen their sound, musicianship, and ensemble skills.
Membership in Vocal Affinity is also an opportunity for continued musical growth. Throughout the season, singers may explore vocal technique, diction, ensemble singing, historical context, performance practice, and other skills that deepen both individual artistry and our collective music-making.
Member Expectations
A significant part of the rehearsal process happens outside of rehearsal. Members are expected to:
- Learn and review music independently
- Arrive at rehearsal prepared
- Adhere to musical markings
- Review recordings, videos, notes, and other feedback provided by the Artistic Director
- Participate fully in rehearsals, sectionals, performances, and other assigned calls
Our rehearsal time together is most effective when everyone comes ready to move beyond the notes and focus on artistry, nuance, and excellence as an ensemble.

Additional rehearsals, sectionals, performances, or other calls may be scheduled throughout the season.
Upon acceptance, singers will receive:
- A complete season calendar
- Membership contract
- Additional ensemble information
- Membership fee and payment information
- Information regarding available financial assistance
All members are expected to pay an annual membership fee.
A Mutual Audition
We believe the audition process goes both ways. While we are getting to know you as a singer and artist, we also want you to experience Vocal Affinity and decide whether the ensemble is the right fit for you.
For that reason, the first two rehearsals serve as a trial period before either the singer or Vocal Affinity makes a full-season commitment. This allows everyone to experience the rehearsal environment, expectations, musical process, and ensemble culture before moving forward together.
Our goal is to create an environment of high-level music-making, learning, service, collaboration, and excitement—one in which every member is both challenged and supported throughout the season.
