Vocal Affinity is a vocal ensemble comprised of singers with a variety of skillsets. Those seeking to audition must possess these artistic skillsets:

  • Excellent level of musicianship
  • Proficient level of Sight-reading
  • Accuracy of pitch intonation
  • Testimony, Passion and Drive

Preparation

Whether you hold a degree in Music, Engineering, Communications, Computer Science, Psychology, or any other occupation, as long as you possess the artistic skillsets we are looking for, then you can join us!

To best prepare, consider sharpening up on basic musicianship (interval training, reading and sight-reading, intonation), familiarizing yourself with vocal concepts and improving your solo singing.

Do not be discouraged if there are areas which are lacking some training. That is why we are here! Our conductor’s motto,

“Anyone, professional or amateur, can create excellent, artistic nuanced music of the highest calibers. It just takes more work for some but it can be done. We will all do it together!”

We all work together to continue growing and becoming our best selves.

Below are some excerpts which will exhibit our sound, approach to musical details of diction and textual/musical expression, and demonstrate art we create by serving and putting forth our best efforts!

Audition Process

Click the “Sign Up” option and submit all documents listed in the instructions on the “Sign Up” page. Upon receiving audition material, the Artistic Director will schedule a conference call video audition. The audition will consist of a singing portion and an interview lasting for a total of one hour.

During the singing portion you will be asked to demonstrate the following:

  • Vocalizes
  • Musicianship (intervals, scales)
  • Sight-reading excerpts

The interview portion of the audition will follow the singing portion. Please bring a list of any questions you may have.

You will be emailed with a decision 2-3 weeks upon completion.

Expectation

All members are expected to pay an annual membership fee. If selected, you will embark on a Journey of service, learning, and excitement. You will learn diction principles, vocal techniques, historical contexts and performance practices, along with ensemble technique that will contribute to your life and music to come.

Most of the rehearsal process takes place from your own home. You will be expected to learn music on your own, adhere to markings and watch videos or any other feedback given by the conductor. “Check-in” video segments will be requested in accordance to the rehearsal schedule.

Typically, the entire ensemble will meet for a 3-day weekend in-person rehearsal in October in preparation for our December performances and again in February in preparation for our Spring performances. Some extra rehearsals or performances may also be assigned. All detailed information will be given once you have been accepted into the ensemble.

Vocal Affinity performances range from community concerts, to professional recordings, touring, and performing at conventions such as the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). We hope you consider joining us!
